City Reminds Pedestrians and Drivers of Back-to-School Travel Safety Tips

MAPLE RIDGE, BC, August 29, 2025 — As the school year begins, the City of Maple Ridge is reminding everyone that whether you’re driving, walking, scooting, or biking we all play a role in ensuring a safe trip.

The 𝐀𝐁𝐂𝐃𝐬 of Pedestrian and Driver Safety

As part of its Safe and Active School Travel Program, the City is sharing the ABCDs of Pedestrian and Driver Safety:

  • 𝐀lert: Stay focused on your surroundings (No phones or headphones). Watch for pedestrians between parked cars. Stop for school buses when lights are flashing.
  • 𝐁right:  Wear bright colours and put reflectors on bags to make yourself more visible.
  • 𝐂ross Safely: Use crosswalks and pedestrian signals. Look left-right-left and shoulder check before and during crossing. Follow instructions of crossing guards. Make eye contact with drivers.
  • 𝐃ecrease Speed: The speed limit is 30km/h from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in school zones on school days and from dawn to dusk in playground zones.

Pedestrian Safety Enhancements

The City has invested in new infrastructure to support active travel and improve safety around schools, including:

  • Traffic Signal at 240 Street & Hill Avenue (Completed: August 2025) - Improved traffic flow and pedestrian safety near Albion Elementary
  • Kanaka Way Crosswalk Improvements (Planned completion: September 2025) - Improving visibility and accessibility
  • School Zone Road Decals (Planned completion: September 2025) - Bright, visible road decals being installed in nine school zones reminding drivers to down.
  • Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB) Installations (Planned completion: December 2025) - 38 new pedestrian crossings by year-end, with 16 located near schools.

School Partnership Programs

The City is currently working with School District 42 and Fraser Health and supporting active school travel programming in up to five schools — encouraging safe, healthy, and sustainable travel. Initiatives include:

  • Best Routes to School maps
  • Walking School Bus opportunities
  • Educational sessions and resources for students, staff, and families
  • Incentives to promote Active School Travel

Transportation Education and Enforcement

The City also supports education and enforcement programs that promote safe travel:

  • Ride the Road Program: A HUB Cycling program building cycling skills and confidence.
  • I Wanna Walk Program: Helping children aged 8+ learn how to plan safe walking routes. Learn more at MapleRidge.ca/Program-Guide.
  • Road Safety Program: RCMP and volunteers monitor school zones, educating drivers on the importance of slowing down. MapleRidge.ca/RoadSafety
