Mosquito Management Program

The City of Maple Ridge is working with Metro Vancouver and neighbouring municipalities on a nuisance mosquito program. The program focuses on control of mosquito larvae and is directed by the Metro Vancouver Pest Management Plan (#701-002-19/24).

The Challenge

Mosquitos deposit eggs in damp substrate (top soils) and in warm stagnant water.  When the freshet occurs each spring, eggs deposited that spring or in previous years hatch into larval form and subsequently to adult form.  The flooded areas along the Fraser River are a significant factor in the emergence of mosquitoes. Mosquitos can travel a significant distance (km's), and therefore, efforts to manage local mosquito habitat will help to reduce the overall number of mosquitos locally, but won't resolve the overall challenge.  The City, working with Metro Vancouver has retained a group of Qualified Professionals (Morrow Biosciences Ltd) to implement the Metro Vancouver Mosquito Pest Management Plan.  These Professionals monitor flood levels, monitor mosquito populations (trap for larval and adult stage mosquitos to assess species occurrence and effectiveness of treatments) and most importantly they apply larvicide treatment to floodplain areas and previously identified breeding sites.  

Residents can reduce local mosquito habitat by:

1. Removing warm, stagnant water around the home and property such as plant holders, old tires, and bird baths.
2. Readily replace water in kiddie pools, bird baths, etc.
3. Maintain your lawn and gardens.    

Residents can protect themselves by:

1. Wearing long sleeved shirts and long pants
2. Wearing light coloured clothing
3. Wearing clothing made of tightly woven materials
4. Wearing mesh “bug jackets” and or “bug hats”
5. Consider using a bug repellent containing DEET or other approved ingredients
6. Establish bat boxes and nesting sites for species that feed on mosquitos
