Waste and Recycling Services in Maple Ridge

The City of Maple Ridge supports a variety of programs to help residents manage waste responsibly and keep our community clean.

Maple Ridge residents are responsible for managing their own waste disposal, as the City does not offer municipal curbside waste collection. Following a 2018 plebiscite, the community voted against city-funded waste collection services, opting instead for residents to make their own arrangements.

Recycling Collection Transition to Recycle BC – Effective January 1, 2025

Starting January 1, 2025, Recycle BC will assume responsibility for residential curbside and multi-family recycling collection in Maple Ridge at no cost to residents, replacing the longstanding services of the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society (RMRS). RMRS will continue to operate the Maple Ridge Recycling Depot and its Supported Work Program, which provides valuable employment opportunities for individuals with diverse abilities.

Key Changes with Recycle BC Service:

Before the transition in January, residents will receive new recycling guides, collection schedules, and sorting stickers for their bins. Multi-family residents will receive building-specific guidelines. For more details, visit RecycleBC.ca/MapleRidge

Community Programs

The City supports the following programs.

Organics Disposal Ban

In line with Metro Vancouver's Organics Disposal Ban, Maple Ridge residents are required to compost food scraps and other organic materials, reducing waste sent to landfills. The ban, introduced in 2015, aims to transform food and yard waste into valuable compost, benefiting the environment. Learn more on the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society website

Why Waste Reduction Matters

Canadians generate approximately 31 million tonnes of garbage each year, yet only 30% of that is recycled. Each person contributes an estimated 2.7 kg of waste per day, placing immense pressure on landfills. By reducing waste, recycling, and composting, we help preserve our natural surroundings and reduce the need for new landfill sites.

Thank you for contributing to a cleaner, greener Maple Ridge! For questions or additional information, please reach out to the Ridge Meadows Recycling Society or the Maple Ridge Recycling and Waste Centre.
