Culture Days

Picturing Ourselves is an exhibition that explores portraiture as a tool for self-representation in an image-saturated era. In this group exhibition, Cara Guri, Gloria Wong, Jake Kimble, Len Pierre, and Odera Igbokwe demonstrate new ways to engage with portraiture, informed by family and community. Through the lens of Western art history, portraiture was historically reserved for royalty, the wealthy, and persons of European ancestry. Individuals outside of these categories were often documented without consent or input into how they were represented, or mis-represented entirely. The five artists demonstrate the continued relevance for portraiture as a genre, positioned with a critical eye.

The City of Maple Ridge is honoured to co-host the Salish Weave exhibit at Albion Community Centre in partnership with c̓əsqənelə Elementary School and School District #42 Indigenous Education for BC Culture Days.  We invite the community to take the opportunity to come experience this beautiful exhibit in person.

Calling artists of all ages! Celebrate Culture Days with the Maple Ridge Public Library’s Tiny Art Show. Pick up your tiny canvas (3”x3”) at the library starting Friday, September 20th and drop off your finished masterpiece before Friday, October 4th. Come see your art on display in the library between Friday October 4thth and Saturday, Oct 12th.

Yes, and! Improv is a theatrical artform where performers do not use a script. But improv isn’t just for those who intend to perform on stage and it’s certainly not just for folks who are (or want to learn to be) funny. Developing improvisational skills supports relationship-building, empathy, confidence, self-awareness, public speaking skills and more.

Come out for an evening with CR Avery and Johnny D Trinh. They're poets, musicians, and filmmakers. One is a bohemian rocker from the streets of East Van, and the other as theatre baby from who found poetry in the Prairies. They're visiting from Vancouver Poetry House to celebrate Culture Days @ Maple Ridge. This event will showcase a range of performances incorporating spoken word, music, and storytelling. CR and Johnny will also share insights on spoken word, and ways to manifest these artforms. They're interested in meeting poets, writers, and makers of play in the area, and hope to build more connections between Vancouver and Maple Ridge.
