In 1923, volunteers built the historic Albion Hall on 240 Street which served the surrounding neighbourhood for 88 years. Due to the significant cost of repairs to keep the building open, the Hall was torn down in 2011 with a commitment to explore options for a new community space in the future.
Here are some key highlights of the journey towards opening the new Albion Community Centre:
- 2013 | A public consultation process was held regarding the Albion Area Plan.
- 2015 | The the City and SD42 entered into a Joint Acquisition Agreement to acquire the required property to facilitate the joint development of the community centre and c̓əsqənelə Elementary.
- 2016 | A public consultation process on design and programming was held at Albion Elementary for the new school and community centre site.
- 2018 | A stakeholder consultation meeting was held at the Maple Ridge Library on the design and offerings of a new Albion Community Centre. A Request for Proposal was issued by the City through BC Bid.
- 2019 | Council awarded the contract for the Albion Community Centre (ACC) Phase One construction.
- 2020 | Council directed staff to obtain pricing for the Phase Two construction and Phase One was completed in Q3 of 2020.
- 2021 | Phase Two of construction continued through the end of the year; however, extreme weather events, supply and service interruptions caused delays in achieving completion.
- 2022 | The Albion Community Centre had its Grand Opening on June 22!
The Albion Community Centre includes several features that help reduce the building's footprint on the surrounding environment!
When approaching the building, you'll notice that part of the roof has solar panels and the other is green. The solar panels on the roof will produce approximately 45,000KWh, which will save about $7,000 annually in electrical costs. The green roof provides a number of benefits including:
- Green roof will retain rainwater and, together with plants, return a portion of this water to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration (evapotranspiration).
- Stormwater that does leave the roof is delayed and reduced in volume.
- Stormwater that runs off a green roof is cleaner than runoff from a conventional roof.
- Retention and delay of runoff eases stress on stormwater infrastructure and sewers.
Green roofs reduce the heat flux through the roof, and less energy for cooling or heating can lead to significant cost savings. Shading the outer surface of the building envelope has been shown to be more effective than internal insulation.
- In summer, the green roof protects the building from direct solar heat.
- In winter, the green roof minimizes heat loss through added insulation on the roof.
- Energy conservation translates into fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
The City secured a $1 million grant from the Government of Canada through the Enabling Accessibility Fund. With the help of this fund, the Albion Community Centre is an inclusive and accessible facility that will meet the varying needs of all community members and participants while offering a variety of community programs and services.
