Changes Announced to the Tax Deferment Program

  • The B.C. government is making it easier to apply for the property tax deferment program
  • B.C. residential property owners can now apply for property tax deferment on their principal residence online, quickly and easily. For the first time, owners can choose to auto renew their application.
  • Municipalities will no longer be responsible for accepting applications.

Property Tax Deferment 



  • A loan program that allows eligible home owners to defer all, or part, of their annual property taxes
  • A Service BC program but City of Maple Ridge accepts the applications and forwards them to Service BC
  • To defer you must:
    • Claim your Home Owner Grant
    • pay: previous years taxes, Utility user fees(sewer, water and blue box),  penalties, and interest 
    • Submit the application to City Hall
  • All people on title must sign any new deferment application (original signatures required, no digital)
  • Applications are only accepted after the property taxes are levied each year between mid May and December 31
  • Complete applications must be submitted on or before the Property Tax Due Date to avoid penalties
  • 2 types of programs: Families with Children and Regular Deferment
