Advancing a Housing Ready Strategy to Build a Community for All

Maple Ridge, B.C. July 30, 2025 – The City of Maple Ridge has exceeded the Province’s Year One housing target under the Housing Supply Act — delivering 751 net new homes between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025 — 23% higher than the Province’s target of 612 for Maple Ridge.

The City’s Housing Target Progress Report, received by Council at its July 29 meeting, marks a significant milestone toward the City’s five-year requirement of 3,954 new homes by 2029.

“This is about more than meeting a provincial target — it’s about delivering on Council’s commitment to meeting the needs of our growing community so young people can find places to rent, families can afford their first home, and seniors have options to downsize,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “Exceeding the provincial benchmark in the first year shows our efforts are working. We’re breaking down barriers, modernizing how we do business, and working with partners to make it easier to build diverse and affordable housing in Maple Ridge.”

Key Results and Progress

  • 751 net new residential units completed (781 units built minus 30 demolitions)
  • 543 additional units approved through rezoning, development, or building permit stages
  • 133 new rental units completed, and an additional 296 rental units approved at earlier development stages
  • Diverse housing mix, including:
    • 222 studio and 1-bedroom units
    • 264 two-bedroom units
    • 265 three-bedroom or larger units

With 19% of its five-year target already met, Maple Ridge is building on the momentum of housing policies and process improvements the City had put in motion before the provincial targets were set.

Making it Easier to Create Housing in Maple Ridge

Through its Housing Ready initiative, the City is taking bold action and streamlining processes including:

  • Streamlined approvals for rezoning, subdivision, and permits
  • Expedited building permit reviews through the Certified Professional Program
  • Zoning updates to align with new provincial housing legislation on small-scale multi-unit housing and transit-oriented areas
  • Modernized fees, bylaws, and a digital building permit portal
  • A new Housing Strategy and Housing Action Plan
  • Updating the Lougheed Transit Corridor, Town Centre, and the Albion Area Plans as part of the Official Community Plan updates
  • Promoting a Housing Design Catalogue for missing middle housing (e.g., duplexes, four-plexes)
  • Launching the first of its kind in B.C. concierge-style development support program.

“The work doesn’t stop here, and we can’t do it alone,” added Mayor Ruimy. “Meeting our housing goals in this financial climate takes leadership, collaboration, and sustained effort. As we work with the development community to deliver more homes, we need senior governments to step up and invest in the infrastructure that supports this growth. Transit, roads, schools, health care, and community amenities must all keep pace with housing delivery.”

Advocating for the Infrastructure to Support Growth

The City continues to advocate for critical infrastructure investments from senior governments through Maple Ridge Moves to unlock housing potential, local jobs and support livability, including: the expansion of Golden Ears Way, widening of Abernethy Way to 256 Street, a new 240 Street bridge into Silver Valley and Golden Ears Park, and Bus Rapid Transit on Lougheed Highway.

Looking Ahead

The City’s strategic focus on smart growth, digital innovation, housing diversity, and streamlined processes will continue to guide efforts. The full Housing Target Progress Report is available at MapleRidge.ca/HousingTarget and has been formally submitted to the Province.
