Submitting a Petition to Council
The City of Maple Ridge encourages community engagement and providing the opportunity for residents to submit petitions to voice their concerns and shape Council decisions.
This process is guided by the City’s Petition to Council Policy, which ensures that all petitions are handled fairly, transparently, and in accordance with privacy legislation.
What is a Petition?
A petition is a formal request signed by multiple people requesting City Council take action on a community issue. It can be submitted as a paper petition or electronically (PDF or online form).
Petitions are used to:
- Raise awareness about a community issue
- Support or oppose a decision being considered by Council
- Request Council take specific actions within its authority
Who Can Sign a Petition?
Anyone can sign a petition, but petitioners must include a breakdown of:
- Local signatories: Residents, property owners, or business owners in Maple Ridge
- Non-local signatories: People who live outside the city
Who Submits the Petition?
Petitions are organized and submitted by the Primary Petitioner (lead individual). Petitions must be submitted to the City’s Corporate Officer and cannot be submitted directly to Council members.
Petition Guidelines
To ensure transparency and protect privacy, all petitions must follow these rules:
For All Petitions (Paper or Online)
- Be addressed to City of Maple Ridge Council, attention Corporate Officer
- Clearly state the action being requested
- Include the petitioner’s name, phone number and email
- Number each page and show the total number of pages
- State the total number of local and non-local signatories
- Must be respectful and free from offensive language
For Paper Petitions
In addition to the above, paper petitions must:
• Be mailed or delivered in person to the Corporate Officer
• Clearly state that it is a public document and may be shared publicly
• Be typed or printed in ink (no pencil)
• Restate the petition request at the top of each page
• Contain original signatures, full names, and addresses of all signatories
For Online Petitions
Online petitions must:
- Be emailed as a PDF to Clerks@MapleRidge.ca , or printed and delivered in person/mail
- State that the petition is a public document and may be shared publicly
- Include the name, full address, and email for each signatory
- Restate the petition request at the top of each page
