MAPLE RIDGE, BC - May 29, 2025 – The City of Maple Ridge is inviting residents and other interest holders to an open house event on June 5 to learn more about how the City is planning for the future of the new provincially-designated Transit-Oriented Areas (TOAs) in the community.

“We’re making it easier to build housing where it makes the most sense—near transit, jobs, and services,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “By investing in transit-oriented development, we’re delivering on our Housing Ready commitment—creating the conditions for good growth, economic resilience, and a more inclusive Maple Ridge. By planning smarter, the City is laying the groundwork for meeting the needs of our fast-growing community. This is what it means to be Housing Ready.”

About Transit-Oriented Areas (TOAs)

TOAs are high-density, mixed-use neighbourhoods located within walking distance of major transit hubs. In June 2024, Council adopted the Transit-Oriented Area Designation Bylaw, officially designating three TOAs in Maple Ridge:

  • Haney Place Transit Exchange
  • Maple Meadows Station
  • Port Haney Station

These areas are subject to new land use regulations that increase allowable heights and densities and remove residential parking requirements to better support mobility, affordability, and sustainability.

Open House

The community is invited to attend an open house to learn more about the Province’s TOA framework and speak with City staff about the new designations and how the City is responding with targeted updates to its land use plans.

Date: Thursday, June 5, 2025
Time: 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM (drop-in anytime)
Location: Maple Ridge Library, 22470 Dewdney Trunk Rd (Fraser Room – 2nd floor)

Required Changes in TOAs

  • Density and Height: TOAs are tiered based on distance from transit, with minimum height and density standards required by the Province to support higher-density development.
  • Parking: Minimum residential parking requirements have been removed for new builds in TOAs, except for accessible and bike parking, to encourage mobility choices and affordability.

Housing Ready – Building a Community for All

The TOAs are just one piece of the City’s Housing Action Plan, which is guided by the 2024 Housing Needs Report and supported by up to $16.6 million from the federal Housing Accelerator Fund that the City advocated for and worked hard to achieve. With 22 actions across seven initiatives, the City is:

  • Streamlining permitting through a new online portal
  • Modernizing zoning and development processes
  • Incentivizing diverse and affordable housing forms
  • Prioritizing housing in transit-connected areas
  • Digitizing approvals to improve transparency and efficiency
