Maple Ridge, B.C. — Aug. 20, 2026 — Two new murals have been unveiled in downtown Maple Ridge, with a third now underway at Haney Place Mall, bringing colour, creativity and the perspectives of local youth to downtown Maple Ridge.

The murals are part of the Mural Collective, a City-funded public art initiative led by the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association (DMRBIA). The project pairs local artists with youth to create large-scale public art that reflects the community, its natural environment, and local perspectives.

“The Mural Collective is a great example of what happens when creativity and community come together,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “These murals are bringing new energy and character to our downtown while giving young people the chance to work alongside professional artists and leave their own mark on Maple Ridge.

The initiative was developed by the DMRBIA as a collaborative approach to downtown beautification, with youth and local artists at the centre of the creative process.

“This project is about creating spaces for connection and a sense of pride in our downtown,” said Nicole Archer, Executive Director of the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association. “We’re excited to bring colour and life to the walls of downtown businesses so residents and visitors alike can experience them and engage with the art to create their own stories that are uniquely connected to Maple Ridge. We’re incredibly proud of what these collaborations have created and grateful to the City for making the Mural Collective possible.”

Mural One - 223 Street and Lougheed Highway

Artist: Ben Evely + Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary School Students
Status: Complete and publicly unveiled

The first mural is located on the Harris & Leib Insurance and Sure Print Copy building. Evely and students created an abstract patchwork-inspired design using photographs they took throughout Maple Ridge.

The interactive artwork invites visitors to step into the abstract scene, take a photo in the ‘spotlight’ and look for a hidden detail incorporated into the design.

Mural Two - Dewdney Trunk Road between 222 and 224 Streets

Artist: Carly Bouwman + Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary School
Status: Complete and publicly unveiled

The second mural is located on the Roots Natural Organic Health Foods building. Bouwman worked with students to create a design inspired by endangered and at-risk plants and animals found in the region.

The mural includes local species such as the great blue heron, western painted turtle, western bumble bee, white sturgeon, Oregon spotted frog, barn owl and marbled murrelet. It celebrates Maple Ridge’s connection to the natural environment and highlights the region’s biodiversity.

Mural Three - Haney Place Mall

Artist: Laura Johnson with students from UPlan
Status: In Progress

The third mural is now taking shape on the northwest/west-facing wall of Haney Place Mall, overlooking the Greg Moore Youth Centre. Johnson is working with UPlan students through each stage of the project, from developing concepts and designs to painting the final installation. Once complete, the mural will add another landmark to downtown Maple Ridge and complete the three-part Mural Collective.

Investing in a Vibrant Downtown

The Mural Collective is funded by the City of Maple Ridge and led and delivered by the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association, with support from participating artists, youth, property owners and community partners.

The project supports the City’s work to create a welcoming and vibrant downtown and expand access to arts and culture in public spaces.  It also gives young people mentorship, practical experience and an opportunity to contribute to their community.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to explore the completed murals, take photos and watch for the completion of the final installation at Haney Place Mall. A list of all Maple Ridge public art locations can be found at MapleRidge.ca/PublicArt
