Fog testing is a standard method of locating plumbing defects on public or private property that incorrectly allow rain or groundwater into the sanitary sewer system.

Description

Provincial legislation requires the City to reduce inflow and infiltration (I&I) on public property and investigate I&I on private property. To meet these requirements, the City monitors, inspects, and repairs the public sanitary sewer system and notifies property owners when private plumbing repairs are needed.

Fog testing involves introducting a non-toxic, visible vapour into the sanitary sewer. Crews monitor where the vapour emerges from the system to determine whether further investigation or repairs are needed.
