Water Restrictions Update

Metro Vancouver has issued an update encouraging residents and businesses to reduce water use and adhere to Stage 2 water restrictions to protect the system while critical infrastructure work is underway, and to prepare for implementation of Stage 3 restrictions sometime in June.

Construction has been underway since the fall on the current phase of the Stanley Park Water Supply Tunnel project. As part of the work, the First Narrows Crossing, one of the region’s key supply pipes from the reservoirs on the North Shore, is out of service. If too much water is used while the crossing is offline, then it could decrease water pressure and affect the ability of first responders to use water for emergencies.

This information is being shared now so residents can stay informed and prepare in advance of tighter restrictions.

Under Stage 3 restrictions:
• Lawn watering remains prohibited.
• Trees, shrubs and flowers may only be watered using a hand-held hose with an automatic shutoff device, a watering container, or drip irrigation. Sprinklers and soaker hoses will no longer be permitted.
• Vegetable gardens and food-producing plants can still be watered at any time using any method.
• Washing driveways, sidewalks and other impermeable surfaces is prohibited unless required for health and safety reasons or to prepare a surface for painting or similar work.
• Filling pools, hot tubs and decorative water features is prohibited.
• Washing vehicles and boats is prohibited, except for cleaning windows, lights, mirrors, license plates, and boat engines for safety purposes.
