Maple Ridge, B.C., June 11, 2026 – Maple Ridge Council has approved up to $190,000 in provincial climate grant funding to launch a two-year Residential Resiliency Energy Retrofit Pilot Program that will help homeowners improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and better protect their homes from extreme heat.
The pilot supports implementation of the City’s climate action plan, Resilient Future 2050 and responds to growing concerns about the impacts of extreme heat on residents and existing housing.
“Many residents are looking for practical ways to make their homes more comfortable, energy efficient, and resilient to extreme heat,” said Mayor Ruimy. “This program will help homeowners access expert advice and available rebates while supporting our community’s climate goals and helping reduce the risks associated with extreme heat.”
The pilot program will focus on older single-detached homes, particularly in neighbourhoods and among residents who are more vulnerable to the effects of overheating, poor indoor air quality, and other climate-related impacts. The program uses mapping data gathered for the Resilient Future 2050 climate action plan to target investments in vulnerable neighbourhoods and provide tangible supports to residents to avoid or limit negative health impacts from climate change.
Funded through the City’s existing Local Government Climate Action Program grant, the pilot will be delivered with no additional cost to taxpayers.
Program Highlights
Through the Residential Resiliency Energy Retrofit Pilot Program homeowners will be able to access energy home assessments, receive specific guidance on retrofit options, and get support navigating available provincial and federal rebates and incentives to manage costs for implementing improvements to their home.
Recommendations for retrofit measures may include:
- improved insulation
- air sealing and caulking
- energy-efficient windows
- installation of high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, such as heat pumps
Homeowners will review the recommendations to determine the options that fit within their budgets and deliver the greatest value for them. The program is designed to deliver multiple benefits for residents, including improved indoor comfort, better energy performance, lower climate risk, and reduced emissions from existing homes.
In addition to homeowner support, the pilot will also include a training component for local trades businesses to help build local capacity for residential retrofit work. Training will be offered through third-party providers and is intended to ensure qualified local contractors and installers are ready to support residents as the program rolls out.
Addressing Emissions and Extreme Heat in Existing Homes
Residential buildings account for a significant share of community emissions in Maple Ridge, with single-detached homes contributing 26.5 per cent of community emissions. At the same time, many older homes were not built to withstand the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme heat events.
The 2021 heat dome underscored the importance of having safer indoor temperatures, with a number of heat-related deaths recorded in Maple Ridge and throughout the Province. The new pilot program will help address those risks by supporting retrofits that can improve cooling, ventilation, and overall home resilience.
Next Steps
The City expects the pilot to support up to 100 home assessments over two years. Annual reports to Council will track participation, retrofit projects completed, trades training participation, estimated energy savings, greenhouse gas reductions, and resident feedback.
The program will be delivered by a third-party service provider selected through a competitive process. Information about eligibility, application timelines, and program launch dates will be announced following program setup.
