High Streamflow Advisory – Be Prepared for Heavy Rain, Rising Rivers and Potential Flooding

Image

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for Maple Ridge and the surrounding region, which means rivers are rising or expected to rise rapidly. No major flooding is expected at this time, but minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

A strong storm system is forecast to bring heavy rain from Wednesday through Friday, with rainfall amounts between 50–130 mm for the South Coast and Lower Mainland. Rivers and creeks are expected to rise quickly Thursday and Friday in response to the rainfall.

What Residents Can Do

Before the event starts:

  • Clear leaves and debris from gutters and catch basins near your home to prevent localized flooding
  • If your property is prone to flooding, prepare sandbags or other flood mitigation measures to protect your property
  • Pre-Register for Provincial Emergency Support Services at: ess.gov.bc.ca
  • Take some time to review your home emergency plan and supplies
  • Have a plan to stay with friends or family outside known floodplains in case of evacuation
  • Check in with neighbours or vulnerable residents to ensure they are aware of the hazards

How to stay safe during the event:

  • Do not walk, cycle, or drive through flooded areas. Turn around, don't drown
  • Drive carefully and give yourself more time to travel
  • Stay clear of fast-flowing rivers, creeks, and potentially unstable riverbanks
  • Keep children close and keep pets on leash, as they may not recognize the danger
  • Check on neighbours or vulnerable residents who may need assistance
  • Stay up to date on local weather at: weather.gc.ca
  • Report downed trees, road debris or blocked storm drains on City property at MapleRidge.ca/Report or call, 604-463-9581
  • Stay at least 10 metres away from downed power lines and call BC Hydro at 1-800-224-9376

  • Inspecting and maintaining dikes and pump stations.
  • Sharing flood preparedness information with the community.
  • Coordinating with key agencies and emergency partners.
  • Preparing sandbags that will be made available if need arises. Locations and details will be posted at MapleRidge.ca/Flood and shared on the City’s social media channels if activated.
