High Streamflow Advisory – Be Prepared for Heavy Rain, Rising Rivers and Potential Flooding

The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for Metro Vancouver and Lower Fraser Valley.

A series of strong storms will impact the Lower Mainland this week, bringing moderate to heavy precipitation through mid-week.

Unseasonably warm temperatures will increase the risk of rain-on-snow and snowmelt, potentially elevating stream and river levels—particularly from Tuesday through Wednesday night. Additional snowmelt and rain-on-snow later in the week may continue to contribute to runoff and keep streamflows elevated.

What the City is Doing

To reduce flood risks and help keep the community safe, the City of Maple Ridge has been taking proactive measures, including:

  • Inspecting and clearing catch basins, culverts and drainage intakes in priority areas
  • Monitoring river and creek levels, including the North and South Alouette, Kanaka Creek and Fraser Rivers
  • Inspecting and maintaining dikes and pump stations
  • Sharing flood preparedness and safety information with the public
  • Coordinating with key agencies and partners
  • Monitoring conditions closely and remaining ready to respond as needed

Sandbags are available at the City’s Operations Centre (23925 Dewdney Trunk Road) for residents living in flood-prone areas if the risk of flooding increases.

Stay Safe and Reduce the Risk of Flooding

The City encourages residents to do their part to prepare and stay safe:

  • Clear leaves and debris from gutters and catch basins near your home to help prevent localized flooding
  • Avoid walking, cycling, or driving through flooded areas
  • Stay away from rivers, creeks, and unstable banks
  • Keep children close and pets on leash and safe round fast moving waters
  • Check on neighbours who may need assistance
  • Report downed trees, road debris, or blocked storm drains on City property to the City’s 24-hour line at 604-463-9581 or at MapleRidge.ca/Report
  • Stay at least 10 metres away from any downed power lines and call BC Hydro at 1-800-BCHYDRO or *HYDRO (*49376)

Be Prepared for Emergencies of All Kinds

With the fall storm season underway, residents are advised to be prepared, stay alert, and take precautions to keep families and neighbourhoods safe.

  • Know the Risks – View more information and flood maps at MapleRidge.ca/Flood
  • Make a Plan – Create a family emergency plan, including arrangements for pets
