TransLink and City of Maple Ridge sign agreement enabling long-planned project to proceed to design

Maple Ridge, B.C., February 2, 2026 – The City of Maple Ridge is supporting detailed design work to expand Golden Ears Way, a project that will address the traffic bottleneck most frequently cited by City residents and businesses as a priority.

The project will expand the corridor owned and operated by TransLink from the current two-lane configuration to a four-lane roadway between the Highway 7 interchange and 210 Street. Detailed design work is currently underway with the goal of starting construction in 2027.

Once completed, drivers will have a more seamless connection from Golden Ears Bridge through to Abernethy Way, a key east-west arterial road that the City is currently extending out to 240 Street with future plans to expand this corridor east to 256 Street.

“With our booming population and growing economy, the City is making smart investments and working with our regional partners to keep people and goods moving here in Maple Ridge and across Metro Vancouver,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “This is an example of the City taking a bold approach to meeting the needs of our community and I’m grateful to the team at TransLink for partnering with us to move forward on this critical project.”

Golden Ears Way has been an advocacy priority for Maple Ridge Council and a key part of the City’s Maple Ridge Moves transportation strategy, which includes several road projects that will alleviate congestion and support TransLink’s introduction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) along Lougheed Highway. The regional transportation authority recently launched the latest public engagement program for the Langley-Haney Place BRT corridor, inviting Maple Ridge residents to learn more about the project and complete an online survey.

The expansion of Golden Ears Way is included in the TransLink Mayors’ Council Access for Everyone 10-year-plan for improvements to transit, active transportation, and the region’s Major Road Network, but the project was not yet funded. That’s now changed, with the City able to use federal infrastructure funding to offset the cost of detailed design.

About Golden Ears Way
Golden Ears Way is a 12.6 km corridor that connects from Pacific Highway/176 Street in Surrey, through Port Kells, extends across the Fraser River via the Golden Ears Bridge, and continues to 128 Avenue/Abernethy Way at 210 Street. The majority of the Golden Ears Way corridor consists of four travel lanes. The northern portion of this roadway between the Highway 7 overpass and 210 Street is currently two lanes; however, the roadway was constructed with key features to enable four lanes.

Peak hour congestion in this western portion of Maple Ridge has been a long-standing challenge. The Maple Ridge Strategic Transportation Plan (2023) noted that 28% of all trips in Maple Ridge travel between 200 and 203 Street along either Highway 7, Dewdney Trunk Road, or Golden Ears Way. Bus Rapid Transit along Lougheed Highway and the expansion of Golden Ears Way alongside improvements to Abernethy Way are part of the Maple Ridge Moves strategy to improve movement of people and goods throughout the community.
