Maple Ridge, B.C., May 29, 2026 — The City of Maple Ridge is inviting residents to participate in an open house to learn more about how the community will accommodate significant housing growth in the coming years as mandated by the Province.

Residents are invited to learn more about these changes at the Planning for Growth Open House on Thursday, June 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Fraser Room (2nd floor) at Maple Ridge Public Library.

The open house will provide information on the proposed changes related to Transit-Oriented Areas (TOAs) and Small-Scale Multi-Unit Housing (SSMUH) and what they may mean for neighbourhoods across Maple Ridge. Provincial housing legislation introduced in 2023 and 2024 is intended to increase housing supply throughout British Columbia. The legislation aims to accelerate housing delivery and expand the range of housing options available in communities across the province.

The legislation requires municipalities to update local regulations related to:

  • Small-Scale Multi-Unit Housing (SSMUH): Housing forms such as secondary suites, garden suites, duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, and multiplexes in certain residential neighbourhoods.
  • Transit-Oriented Areas (TOAs): Provincially designated areas around key transit hubs where higher-density and mixed-use development must be allowed.
  • Development financing tools and growth-related infrastructure planning

Like all municipalities in British Columbia, Maple Ridge has until June 30 of this year to make bylaw changes to align with the legislation.

Planning for Growth in Maple Ridge
As Maple Ridge continues to grow, the City is taking a data-driven approach to ensure that housing growth is aligned with the infrastructure the City is responsible for, including transportation networks, parks, utilities, and community services.

The City continues to advocate to the provincial government to partner on essential infrastructure projects and ensure funding for public transit, healthcare, and school increases alongside housing growth.

The City’s proposed zoning updates focus new housing opportunities in strategic locations, including near transit, within the Town Centre, and in areas where existing or planned infrastructure (such as water, sewer, transportation, and other amenities) can best accommodate growth.

This approach supports the creation of complete, walkable communities where residents can live closer to transit, jobs, services, parks, and amenities while maintaining access to green space and community connections.

What Do the Changes Mean for Maple Ridge?

The new provincial legislation changes how municipalities plan for and approve housing development. To meet provincial requirements, the City is introducing four new transit-oriented zoning districts and updating density, height, and parking regulations within these areas.

Proposed updates to zoning regulations include changes to:

  • permitted development densities
  • building heights
  • setbacks and siting requirements
  • parking requirements
  • lot coverage
  • landscaping and site design standards

The proposed zoning amendments would also:

  • permit up to three, four, or six housing units on eligible single-detached and duplex lots, depending on their size and location
  • expand opportunities for housing types such as secondary suites, detached garden suites, duplexes, triplexes, fourplexes, and multiplexes
  • establish new zoning regulations for Transit-Oriented Areas surrounding major transit hubs
  • remove public hearing requirements for residential projects that are consistent with the Official Community Plan, as required by provincial legislation
