Maple Ridge, B.C., April 30, 2026 — The City of Maple Ridge is advancing the McKenney Creek Restoration and Enhancement Plan to protect and improve an important natural asset while supporting growth in the city’s west and central areas.
McKenney Creek flows through a 500-hectare catchment, extending north from the Lougheed Transit Corridor Area, through downstream agricultural lands to the South Alouette River. Although past urban and agricultural development has impacted the creek, it remains an important environmental corridor with strong potential for restoration and long-term resilience.
Plan Objectives
The Plan will establish a clear strategy to improve the health and function of the McKenney Creek system. It will:
- Assess current environmental conditions
- Identify opportunities to reduce the impacts of urban growth and climate change
- Set targets for peak flow management and water quality
- Outline phased actions to restore and enhance the creek corridor
- Identify opportunities to improve access, connectivity, and appreciation for the creek
Key focus areas include:
- Ecological health, biodiversity, and invasive species management: Enhancing stream and riparian conditions, managing invasive plants, and strengthening habitat continuity
- Water quality improvements, including identifying opportunities to improve the treatment of urban stormwater runoff before it enters the creek
- Flooding and drainage, establishing stormwater management targets for development and infrastructure upgrades to reduce flood risk
- Beautification and community connectivity, Enhancing the creek as a valued natural amenity and enhance public access where feasible
Key considerations will include infiltration constraints under the Fraser River Escarpment Policy, property ownership, and future funding considerations.
The Plan supports the City’s broader commitment under its Climate Leadership & Environmental Stewardship Strategy to enhance and protect the health of the natural environment.
Next Steps
The next phase of the project will include engagement with local First Nations and interest holders, report development, and recommended improvements. Staff are expected to bring an implementation plan for McKenney Creek Restoration and Enhancement to Council for consideration.
