Maple Ridge B.C., June 18, 2026 — As one of the fastest growing municipalities in the Metro Vancouver region, the City of Maple Ridge welcomes the announcement today by Prime Minister Mark Carney and BC Premier David Eby on British Columbia’s agreement under the federal Build Communities Strong Fund (BCSF).
With a $5-billion federal commitment alongside provincial funding to “transform, connect and modernize communities across the province over the next 10 years,” this agreement represents an important opportunity both for local governments and for the development industry.
The City of Maple Ridge is currently planning and designing critical infrastructure projects that support housing growth – including water, sewer and road improvements as well as much-needed recreation facilities to serve both current and future residents. The City’s population is expected to grow by almost 40 per cent over the next 20 years.
“Maple Ridge wants to be among the first communities to work with the provincial and federal governments to determine how to unlock these new funds and get projects built,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “We know the need is urgent. Developers are struggling to deliver new housing projects in a difficult market, which makes it challenging for cities to meet our legislated provincial housing targets. Relief on development costs will support the construction of more housing while the government funding will allow cities to deliver the infrastructure needed to build complete communities.”
In addition to municipal infrastructure such as water and wastewater systems, local roads, community centres and parks, fast-growing communities like Maple Ridge have also been pushing the Province to expand healthcare, hospital capacity, schools and other critical services that fall within provincial jurisdiction.
“I’m pleased to see that today’s agreement will also support expansion of healthcare facilities, which along with schools are necessary infrastructure to support the kind of rapid population growth we’ve seen here in Maple Ridge,” said Mayor Ruimy.
While today’s announcement referenced $2.5 billion for public transit, this was announced previously and does not include any new federal or provincial funding towards construction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects including the Langley-Haney Place BRT. “We are waiting on the Government of Canada to provide their previously committed funding to TransLink so we can deliver much-needed transit expansion in the region,” Mayor Ruimy said. “As a rapidly growing community, Maple Ridge needs to see a provincial and federal commitment so we can deliver BRT and connect our residents to the region’s rapid transit network.”
