Maple Ridge, B.C., April 28, 2025 – The City of Maple Ridge is observing Monday, April 28 as the National Day of Mourning to honour workers killed, injured, or suffered work-related illnesses.

City staff will pause for a moment of silence at 11:00 a.m. to reflect on those lost due to workplace incidents and to reaffirm their commitment to preventing future tragedies. Flags at City facilities will be lowered to half-mast, and City Hall will be illuminated in orange to mark the occasion.

“The National Day of Mourning is a solemn reminder of the importance of workplace safety,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “We honour the memory of those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries and illnesses due to their work. This day reinforces our collective responsibility to ensure every worker returns home safely.”

In 2023, WorkSafe BC reported 175 work-related deaths in British Columbia. Of these, 93 were due to occupational diseases, including 48 from asbestos exposure, and 60 resulted from traumatic injuries such as falls and being struck by objects. Additionally, 22 fatalities were related to motor vehicle incidents.

The City remains committed to fostering a strong workplace safety culture, supported by its Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee and a comprehensive framework of policies, procedures, and employee training programs.

First recognized by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1984 and officially proclaimed by the federal government in 1991, the National Day of Mourning is now observed in over 100 countries worldwide.

The 2025 Day of Mourning ceremony will take place at Jack Poole Plaza in Vancouver at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 28. To view the ceremony online or make a dedication to fallen workers or for more information, please visit dayofmourning.bc.ca.
