Project Description
The Maple Ridge Secondary School (MRSS) Running Track Upgrades project is one of the Parks, Recreation & Culture infrastructure priorities approved to proceed as part of the Alternate Approval Process after significant community consultation in 2016. The running track and facility upgrades include four components: lighting for the track, upgraded spectator seating, universal washrooms and storage, and a competition-level field throw facility.
Project Updates
2023 – Minor Track Facility Improvements
Final improvements around the track facility are planned for 2023 and in advance of the BC Summer Games to be hosted in the community in 2024. These include additional seating areas, drinking fountain, shot put landing zone improvements, and re-painting the track lines.
July 15, 2021 – Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, and BC Games Society Legacy Funding Announcement for BC Summer Games in 2024
On July 15, 2021, the community came together to celebrate the completion of the hammer and discus throws facility, running track lighting installation, and new spectator seating. The celebration included an announcement from the provincial government through the BC Games Society, providing legacy funding in support of minor sports community development projects, including the MRSS Facility and Running Track upgrades.
July 2021 – Construction Completed for the Spectator Seating Building Component
Running track lighting installation is now complete and operational. The new bleacher facility is for track and field equipment, complete with upgraded spectator seating, 3 universal washrooms, and storage a area.
August 2020 - Construction Start for Running Track Lighting
Construction has begun on the field lighting component of the track and facility improvements project and is anticipated to be completed in December 2020.
July 2020 – Hammer and Discuss Throws Facility Completed
The hammer and discus throws facility is the first component of the track and facility improvements project to be completed with a continuation of the walking pathways connecting to the existing trails in Merkley Park. January 2020 – Construction Start for the Spectator Seating Building Component
Construction for the spectator seating building component started and is anticipated to be completed in December 2020.
March 2019 – Architectural Design Services
The detailed design for each of the components was completed incorporating feedback received from stakeholders through the design process.
January 28, 2019 – Stakeholder Consultation
This was a follow up to the stakeholder meeting held in 2016, when this project was originally identified as part of a number of AAP projects within our community. The City invited key stakeholders for questions and feedback on information panels that staff and the design team presented on the proposed project. The team were available to answer participant's questions and provided comment cards. Thank you to everyone who attended and provided feedback.
The City continued further consultations with stakeholders, the School District and the community throughout the detailed design stage.
2016 – Alternative Approval Process (AAP)
As part of the AAP phase, concepts were proposed for the upgrades at MRSS.
