Maple Ridge, B.C., June 18, 2025– New short-term rental (STR) regulations in Maple Ridge now require all hosts, including those on platforms like Airbnb or VRBO, to obtain a business licence.

The new regulations, approved by Council on April 22, 2025, respond to changing provincial legislation and reflect local feedback gathered over the past two years. The new framework is designed to balance economic opportunity with livability by preserving long-term rental stock, supporting tourism, and ensuring STRs are safe and well-managed.

“These new regulations provide a clear, fair framework for short-term rentals that put our community first,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “We’re protecting long-term housing, supporting responsible hosts, and making sure our neighbourhoods remain welcoming, vibrant places to live. Whether you’re currently operating a short-term rental or thinking about becoming a host, we want to help you understand the process and make informed decisions.”

What it Means for Residents and Hosts

  • Only principal residences can be used for STRs (where you reside for the majority of the year).
  • There is a minimum lot size requirement of 371 square metres.
  • STRs in townhouses and apartments are not permitted.
  • Up to three bedrooms individually listed or one whole unit listing are allowed, with a maximum of six guests per listing.
  • All STRs must be licensed by the City and must provide proof of insurance, emergency contact information, and one off-street parking space per listing.

The City is inviting current or prospective hosts to learn about the application process and licensing requirements for their specific property by booking a 20-minute information session with a City Planner.

As applications continue to be received and processed, the City is thanking applicants for their patience during this transition period. A one-year review will assess how the regulations are working.

Background

The City of Maple Ridge has been actively reviewing its Short-Term Rental (STR) policies since 2019. In 2023, public engagement was conducted to gather community feedback, which helped shape the proposed regulations. The proposed rules restrict STRs in townhouses and apartments, consistent with the City’s strategic goals of maintaining a liveable community and ensuring responsible governance.
