City of Maple Ridge Reminds Residents to Stay Bear and Wildlife Aware

Maple Ridge, B.C., June 13, 2025 – Following recent bear encounters and with other wildlife, the City of Maple Ridge reminds residents to be bear-aware and take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of wildlife conflicts in residential areas.

As temperatures rise, wildlife such as bears, raccoons, and coyotes become more active and may be attracted to urban neighbourhoods in search of easy food sources. Managing attractants—like unsecured garbage, bird feeders, fallen fruit, pet food, and compost—is key to preventing unwanted visits and keeping both people and animals safe.

The City continues to work closely with the BC Conservation Officer Service and WildSafeBC to educate the community on wildlife safety and enforce attractant-related regulations. City Bylaw Services staff are actively undertaking outreach efforts to help residents reduce risks and ensure compliance with local bylaws.

To reduce the risk of wildlife encounters, the City recommends the following:

  • Secure Garbage: Store garbage and green waste in wildlife-resistant containers or a secure building. Only place carts curbside after 5:00 a.m. and remove by 7:00 p.m. on collection day.
  • Remove Bird Feeders: Take down bird feeders during warmer months when natural food is available.
  • Manage Compost Properly: Use bear-resistant composters and avoid adding meat, fish, or cooked food scraps. Freeze strong-smelling waste until collection day.
  • Clean BBQs: Clean thoroughly after each use to remove grease and food residue.
  • Feed Pets Indoors: Do not leave pet food outside, especially overnight.
  • Protect Beehives and Livestock: Use electric or secure fencing to safeguard beehives, chicken coops, and other small livestock.
  • Pick Fruit Promptly: Remove ripe and fallen fruit from trees and vines immediately.

If you encounter a bear or other wildlife:

  • Stay calm and do not run.
  • Back away slowly while speaking in a calm voice.
  • Give the animal plenty of space to leave the area.
  • Keep pets leashed and close to you, especially during early morning or evening hours.

Residents are advised to report wildlife-human interactions where public safety may be at risk to the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP). If you encounter a bear, remain calm, back away slowly, and avoid running. Always give the animal plenty of space to leave the area.

The City's Wildlife and Vector Control Bylaw aims to reduce human/wildlife interactions and ensure wildlife protection and public safety. Those found contravening this bylaw can be issued daily fines ranging from $100 to $500.
