Maple Ridge, B.C., October 4, 2024 – As Fire Prevention Week approaches from October 6 to 12, the City of Maple Ridge is reminding residents to test their smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly to provide warnings in the event of a fire.

This year’s theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”, highlights the importance of having well-maintained smoke alarms installed in key areas of the home. Studies show that having a working smoke alarm cuts the risk of dying in a home fire by 50%. Tragically, many fire-related deaths occur while people are asleep, inhaling smoke and toxic fumes. A smoke alarm can be the critical alert needed to wake residents and give them time to escape safely.

"Smoke alarms are one of the most vital safety tools in any home, but they can only save lives if they’re working properly," said Interim Fire Chief Dave Samson. "Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time for Maple Ridge residents to check their alarms, replace batteries if needed, and ensure the alarms are in the right places. It's a small step that can make a difference in preventing tragedies."

Key Smoke Alarm Safety Tips for Residents:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button and replacing batteries as necessary.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years or sooner if they don’t respond when tested.
  • Consider the needs of all household members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities, to ensure everyone can receive early warnings.
  • Practice your home fire escape plan regularly to ensure that all family members know how to evacuate quickly and safely in case of a fire.
