Maple Ridge, Apr 8, 2025 – The City of Maple Ridge is inviting the community to participate in the third and final phase of community engagement for the City’s Climate Action Plan.

Feedback on the proposed actions can by provided by taking an online survey from April 8 – April 28, 2025 at Engage.MapleRidge.ca/ClimateAction or attending in-person engagement events.

This engagement phase allows the community to review and provide feedback on the revised actions that will form the City’s first-ever Climate Action Plan, which will outline a strategy to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and increase the City’s resilience to climate change.

“The bold moves being proposed in the Climate Action Plan provide a road map for a healthier, more resilient Maple Ridge,” said Mayor Ruimy. “From expanding our tree canopy to keep streets cooler and safer, to strengthening flood protection and making it easier for people to walk, bike, or take transit—we’re focused on tangible actions. Setting low-carbon standards for municipal projects is part of that vision. Now we need to hear from our community to make sure we’re moving in the right direction.”

What’s New in Phase 3

The proposed actions for Phase 3 were refined based on community feedback from Phase 2, along with an evaluation of City resources and implementation requirements. These updated actions follow a low-carbon resilience approach—tackling both climate adaptation and greenhouse gas reduction—while supporting community priorities like public health, economic growth, and infrastructure resilience.

The actions are organized into five “Bold Moves”:

  1. Address Critical Climate Risks with and for the Community: Strengthening the City’s ability to manage extreme weather events, wildfire risks, and poor air quality to protect residents and infrastructure.
  2. Enhance City Infrastructure, Natural Assets, and Services for Climate Readiness: Ensuring roads, drainage systems, and green spaces are designed to withstand climate impacts.
  3. Encourage Zero Carbon and High-Efficiency Buildings: Encouraging energy-efficient new construction and retrofits to lower emissions and reduce long-term costs.
  4. Foster Sustainable and Active Transportation Choices: Expanding public transit, walking, and cycling options while supporting vehicle electrification.
  5. Support Low-Carbon Economy and Agriculture: Helping businesses and farmers transition to sustainable practices and attract investment in clean technology.

Additional Highlights:

  • 55 new climate actions proposed, in addition to 102 actions already in progress.
  • GHG reduction targets: 45% by 2030 (from 2010 levels) and net-zero by 2050.
  • Climate risk assessment to adapt to climate impacts to help protect residents, infrastructure, and natural assets.

About the Climate Action Plan

The Climate Action Plan is Maple Ridge’s roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate change impacts. It builds on existing City initiatives and incorporates community feedback to create practical, locally-driven solutions. The plan will guide City policies, infrastructure investments, and community partnerships over the next decade to ensure a safer, healthier, and more resilient future for all residents.
