Extending Abernethy Way from 232 to 240 Street will improve connectivity, boost economic growth, enhance access to industrial lands and create jobs

Maple Ridge, B.C., November 27, 2025 — The City of Maple Ridge is moving ahead with the next phase of the Abernethy Way Corridor Improvements Project, extending the road from 232 Street to 240 Street along 124 Avenue.

This work is a key part of the City’s long-term Maple Ridge Moves transportation strategy and will improve east-west connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, improve access for emergency responders, support economic growth, enhance access to industrial lands, and foster local job creation.

“Abernethy Way is a vitally important infrastructure project for our growing community of over 110,000,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “By extending this east-west corridor, we are unlocking economic potential through improved access to over 600 acres of industrial lands on 256 Street. It will reduce congestion on Lougheed Highway and Dewdney Trunk Road, enhance access to Silver Valley and provide safer cycling and pedestrian connections. This is an investment in the future of Maple Ridge.”

The planning of this multi-phase project started in 2008 and will ultimately create a continuous four-lane arterial road stretching from 210 Street to 240 Street with a future connection to 256 Street. Council has approved the alignment for the 232–240 Street extension along 124 Avenue following detailed technical studies, an environmental review, and based on previous community engagement.

The route was selected as it provides the strongest east-west connection to help traffic flow more evenly across the community, has the least impact on the environment and Agriculture Land Reserve (ALR), and provides the safest, most cost-effective option, as the road will be straight with well-established sight lines.

“We know this project will affect the people who live along the route, and we’ve put a dedicated team and resources in place to work closely with them,” said Mayor Ruimy. “We're committed to listening and working with affected residents, communicating openly, and acting in good faith.”

The City has reached out to the affected property owners along the 124 Avenue alignment from 232 Street to 240 Street and will engage with them about next steps. Compensation will be negotiated with the affected owners and will follow provincial legislative requirements.

Key features of the Abernethy Way extension include:

  • Four lanes between 232 and 240 Street with turning lanes at key intersections
  • A sidewalk on the south side, and a multi-use pathway on the north side
  • Upgraded intersections and municipal utilities, including new creek crossings
  • Green infrastructure, landscaping, and tree planting

A Vital Economic Link – Connecting to the North 256 Street Industrial Lands

With this 232–240 Street segment moving forward, the City has also identified the future extension from 240 Street to 256 Street as the next phase that will help realize the full vision of the North 256 Industrial Lands Area Plan, which is currently in development. The extension of Abernethy Way is essential to opening new industrial development in this area and supporting business investment which will help create local jobs and diversify our tax base. While the timing of the construction of the next phase of Abernethy Way is still to be determined, planning for a staged approach is in progress.

Strategic Transportation Plan & Maple Ridge Moves Strategy

The Abernethy Way Corridor Improvements project is a multi-phase effort as part of the City’s Strategic Transportation Plan and the Maple Ridge Moves strategy. Other major projects in Maple Ridge Moves include advancing Bus Rapid Transit on Lougheed Highway, advocating for the Golden Ears Way expansion, which is owned and operated by TransLink, and constructing a future bridge at 240 Street to provide an alternate access to the rapidly growing Silver Valley area.

Project Timeline and Next Steps

  • 2025–2026: Road design, property owner discussions, property acquisition
  • 2027: Construction begins for the 232–240 Street extension
  • Future Phase (240–256 Street): Planning underway, construction timing to be determined.

Funding for the Abernethy Way extension between 232 and 240 Streets is included in the 2025-2029 Capital Program. The City will also seek funding from senior levels of government.
