Annual Water Use Restrictions in Effect Starting May 1

Maple Ridge, B.C., April 30, 2025 – The City of Maple Ridge is reminding residents and businesses that Stage 1 regional restrictions will be in effect from May 1 to October 15, 2025, as part of Metro Vancouver’s annual Drinking Water Conservation Plan.

The restrictions help conserve our region’s drinking water supply during the drier months when demand is highest. Residents and businesses are encouraged to follow the regulations and use water wisely.

Stage 1 Restrictions:

Residential Lawn Watering:

  • Even-numbered addresses may water lawns on Saturdays
  • Odd-numbered addresses may water lawns on Sundays
  • Automatic watering is permitted between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m
  • Manual watering is permitted between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m

Non-Residential Lawn Watering:

  • Even-numbered addresses may water lawns on Mondays.
  • Odd-numbered addresses may water lawns on Tuesdays.
  • Automatic watering is permitted between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.
  • Manual watering is permitted between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

Gardens, Trees, and Shrubs:

  • Sprinklers may be used any day from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for residential properties, and from 4:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. for non-residential properties.
  • Hand watering and drip irrigation are permitted at any time.
  • All hoses must have an automatic shut-off nozzle.

Healthy lawns typically need only one hour of watering per week. Allowing lawns to go dormant in summer is natural and helps save water. Exemptions are available for newly planted lawns and for pest management treatments such as chafer beetle applications.

Beginning May 1, City staff will be providing additional education and Bylaw Compliance Officers will be issuing Bylaw Notices for non-compliance. Fines for non-compliance range from $250 to $1,000 under the City’s Drinking Water Conservation Plan Bylaw.

Ways to Conserve Water:

  • Adjust sprinklers to avoid watering sidewalks and driveways.
  • Water in the early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation.
  • Use mulch in garden beds to retain soil moisture.
  • Fix leaks promptly — even small drips add up quickly.
  • Install rain barrels to capture and reuse rainwater for your garden.
