Maple Ridge, B.C., January 16, 2026 – The City is reminding residents and business owners that they can help improve urban heat, air, and water quality in their neighbourhoods by requesting a street tree for the boulevard space next to their home or business. Street tree requests help the City plan future plantings and expand the urban tree canopy in areas where additional shade and greenery are needed.
If you would like the City to consider planting a tree in the boulevard space in front of your property, please submit a request at MapleRidge.ca/StreetTrees.
City staff will review each location to confirm suitability, including available space, underground utilities, visibility, and safety.
Boulevard tree planting is part of the City’s broader Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP), a 20-year plan to protect, manage, and expand Maple Ridge’s tree canopy. The plan guides where and how trees are planted, with a focus on equity, climate resilience, and environmental stewardship.
Through the UFMP, the City is working toward a goal of 40% urban tree canopy coverage by 2050 to:
• reduce urban heat
• improve air and water quality
• manage stormwater and reduce flooding
• support biodiversity and habitat
City Planting Over 1000 New Trees – Project Update
The City is making progress on a three-year initiative, funded by the federal government, to plant more than 1,000 new trees in parks and along residential streets, primarily in west Maple Ridge where tree canopy coverage is lowest.
Planning and site assessments were completed in 2024 and 2025, and tree planting began in October 2025. Planting will continue through Spring 2026, focusing on approximately 20 west side parks and residential streets. Residents living near planting locations were invited to attend an information session in June 2025 and can also access information on the 1,000 Trees Project Page. To date, more than 750 new street trees and park trees have been planted as part of this program.
The 1,000 Trees initiative is funded through the Government of Canada’s $2 billion Trees Program, delivered through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Growing Canada’s Community Canopies initiative. This funding supports municipal tree planting projects across Canada, including Maple Ridge.
Street Tree Maintenance
The City is responsible for the care and maintenance of boulevard and street trees, including watering, pruning, and health monitoring. Residents are welcome to assist by helping water a newly planted tree near their property, but it is not required. If you see a street tree that requires maintenance, please report at MapleRidge.ca/Report.
