Be Prepared – Heavy Rain, Strong Winds and Potential Flooding Forecasted

Maple Ridge, B.C., UPDATE October 18, 2024—Maple Ridge residents are advised to prepare for heavy rain, strong winds, and possible flooding as Environment Canada forecasts a significant weather system for the region. Heavy rains and strong winds are expected tomorrow and over the weekend, which may cause localized flooding, downed trees and power lines, and utility outages.

Flood Watch

The forecasted rainfall has led the River Forecast Centre to issue a Flood Watch for the region. River levels are expected to rise quickly in response to rainfall on Friday, and remain high through Saturday and into Sunday. Residents should avoid going near rivers and streams throughout the City.

City Taking Proactive Measures

The City of Maple Ridge actively monitors water levels along the North and South Alouette and Fraser Rivers, as higher-than-normal levels pose safety risks. River level information is available at MapleRidge.ca/Flood.

To reduce flood risks and ensure public safety, the City is taking the following actions:

  • Inspecting and clearing catch basins, culverts, and drainage intakes in priority areas
  • Monitoring river and creek levels to adjust response efforts as necessary
  • Patrolling and maintaining dikes and pump stations.
  • Sharing flood preparedness information with the public
  • Coordinating with key agencies and partners

Stay Safe and Reduce the Risk of Flooding

The City encourages residents to take the following precautions and safety measures:

  • Clear leaves and debris from roof gutters and catch basins near your homes. Locate nearby catch basins or storm drains at RidgeView.
  • Avoid walking, driving, or cycling through flooded areas or past barricades. More than six inches of water can knock people off their feet, and twelve inches can sweep a vehicle away.
  • Stay away from fast-flowing rivers and unstable riverbanks, especially at higher elevations. Keep children and pets close at all times.
  • Avoid forested areas during storms due to the risk of falling branches or trees.
  • Check on neighbours who may need assistance
  • Drive with caution, as visibility may be reduced. Check road conditions on DriveBC.
  • Stay at least 10 metres away from any downed or damaged power lines. Call BC Hydro at 1-800-BCHYDRO (1-800-224-9376) or *HYDRO (*49376) on your mobile to report.
  • Report concerns related to debris on roadways, fallen trees on City property, or potholes to the City’s 24-hour line at 604-463-9581 or report at MapleRidge.ca/Report

Be Prepared for Flooding

The City also reminds residents to use this as an opportunity to be prepared for flooding or any emergency by taking the following measures.

Know the Risks

  • Check if you live in a flood-risk area by viewing the City’s floodplain map MapleRidge.ca/Flood.
  • If flooding is likely in your area, plan and take precautions to minimize damage to your home
  • Consult with an insurance agent about flood insurance for your home and business

Have a Plan

In an emergency, residents may be advised to evacuate their homes for safety.

  • Be prepared to stay home or shelter in place, with enough food and water for each family member for three to seven days.
  • Make arrangements for your pets and any livestock
  • Be ready for potential utility outages (power, gas and communications)
  • Pre-register for Provincial Emergency Support Services

Gather Your Supplies

  • Prepare grab-and-go emergency supply kits for your home, car and work.
  • Keep important papers collected in a grab-and-go location or scan and email to yourself.
