Maple Ridge, B.C., August 30, 2025 – The City of Maple Ridge has unveiled a new commemorative crosswalk in front of the Maple Ridge Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88, located at Brown Avenue and 224 Street, to honour veterans and members of the Canadian Armed Forces.
The crosswalk design—painted in red and featuring the emblem of a soldier alongside the words Lest We Forget—was developed in close collaboration with the Maple Ridge Royal Canadian Legion and approved by the Royal Canadian Legion's Dominion Executive Council. The crosswalk was painted overnight on August 29 and officially unveiled with a ceremony on August 30 attended by Mayor and Council and Legion executives.
"This crosswalk serves as a visible and daily reminder of the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our country," said Mayor Dan Ruimy. "We committed to having it in place ahead of Remembrance Day this year, and by working closely with the Legion, we've been able to deliver on that promise. By honouring our veterans in this meaningful way, we are expressing our gratitude and deep respect while strengthening the ties between our history, our community, and our future."
Legion representatives worked closely with the City to determine the location and finalize the design, ensuring the project reflects the shared values of remembrance and community pride.
"This initiative is a tribute to the men and women who have served Canada, and it's deeply meaningful to see it located right outside our Legion," said Allan Casswell, President of the Maple Ridge Royal Canadian Legion Branch 88. "As we look ahead to Remembrance Day, this crosswalk stands as a powerful reminder of our collective promise to never forget."
The project was funded through the City's Operations budget and originated from discussions between Mayor Ruimy and the Legion as well as requests from community members. It also supports Council's broader strategic goals of enhancing public spaces, improving accessibility, and fostering community connection.
