224 Street closed at the bridge north of 132 Avenue while work is underway.
Maple Ridge, B.C., July 30, 2026 – The City of Maple Ridge will begin maintenance work on the North Alouette River between 224 Street and Edge Street as part of the City’s ongoing, year-round flood prevention measures.
This work is being done to help support flood protection, river flow, and long-term infrastructure resilience in the area. Work is expected to continue through the approved fisheries work window.
As part of the project, 224 Street will be closed at the bridge north of 132 Avenue while work is underway from Tuesday, August 4 to Wednesday August 5 between 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. A traffic management plan will be in place, including a signed detour for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and work crews.
Residents may notice crews, equipment, temporary access routes, staging areas, material stockpiles, and increased construction activity near the river corridor while the project is underway. The City will make every effort to minimize disruption and complete the work safely and responsibly.
Residents and road users are asked to:
- Follow posted signs and detour routes
- Allow extra travel time
- Use caution around crews and equipment
- Avoid entering active work areas
The river maintenance work may include removing accumulated material, gravel extraction, bank stabilization, sediment handling, temporary stockpiling, site access and staging, and equipment movement within approved work areas.
Permits are in place for the work beneath 224 Street bridge. Permits for the remaining work areas are expected before work proceeds in those locations. The City will only carry out work in accordance with applicable regulations, environmental requirements, and permits from the BC Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
The City has engaged a qualified environmental consultant to support and oversee the project, working with a hydrologist and geotechnical engineer. The City has also engaged with the Alouette River Management Society, the Alouette Valley Association, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and the BC Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, and received input from local First Nations.
A Chance Find Management Protocol has also been prepared for this location. This provides guidance if archaeological, cultural, or heritage materials are unexpectedly found during the work.
The City recognizes the environmental and cultural importance of the North Alouette River and is committed to completing this work safely, responsibly, and with the required environmental controls, permits, protocols, and professional oversight in place.
Flood prevention is a key part of the City’s emergency preparedness and infrastructure planning. Throughout the year, the City monitors conditions, maintains drainage and flood protection systems, and completes approved work to help protect people, property, roads, utilities, and the environment.
