Maple Ridge Fire and Rescue Services has lifted the city-wide Category 1 (campfires) fire ban effective noon today, Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026. The decision follows the Coastal Fire Centre updated wildfire risk assessment, which considered cooler temperatures and improved humidity across the region.
Category 2 and 3 open fires remain prohibited within most of the Coastal Fire Centre, including Maple Ridge, until the order is rescinded. This includes backyard burning, larger open fires and the following activities and equipment:
- Fireworks and firecrackers
- Binary exploding targets
- Burn barrels and burn cages of any size
- Controlled air incinerators
- Air curtain burners
- Carbonizers
The City’s fire restrictions remain aligned with the Coastal Fire Centre to help reduce wildfire risk and protect the community.
Campfires
Category 1 campfires are now permitted only where outdoor burning is allowed under the City’s Outdoor Burning Regulation Bylaw. Campfires must:
- Be contained in a fire pit or permanent enclosure
- Be no larger than 0.5 metres high and 0.5 metres wide
- Be at least 15 metres from buildings, structures, overhead wires and forest edges
- Be attended at all times by an adult aged 19 or older
- Have a working hose and shovel available until the fire is fully extinguished
- Not be used in unsafe or windy conditions
Fall Burning Season and Permits
As residents prepare for the fall burning season and events, the City reminds everyone about the rules for open burning and that fireworks are prohibited without a permit.
Residents planning Category 2 and 3 open burns must get a valid permit. Open burning is only permitted in designated areas during these timeframes.
- Fall Burning Season: October 15 to November 15.
- Spring Burning Season: April 15 to May 15
Burning permits will be available for purchase beginning October 1, 2026. Permits cost $75 and are available online at MapleRidge.ca/Burning or in person at Revenue Services at City Hall, 11995 Haney Place.
Backyard burning is only permitted:
- On properties within the City’s Open to Burning area
- During the approved burning season
- With a valid permit
- When weather, air quality and fire conditions allow
Permits are non-refundable and may be revoked without notice if conditions become unsafe or a fire ban is issued.
Fireworks and Firecrackers
The sale of fireworks and firecrackers is prohibited in Maple Ridge. Lighting fireworks or firecrackers is not permitted without a permit. Fireworks pose serious risk and safety hazards to the community, pets and wildlife. Violators face fines of $500 to $1000 and will be required to surrender their fireworks.
