Maple Ridge, B.C., August 24, 2026 – Construction is set to start this week on the new Port Haney Multi-Use Pathway (MUP), a riverfront active transportation route that will extend from Port Haney Wharf to Kanaka Creek Regional Park.
Formerly used as a log sort area and acquired by the City in 2021, the 5-acre riverfront site is located between the CPKC rail tracks and Haney Bypass to the north and the Fraser River to the south. The pathway will be an important milestone in the City’s long-term vision for a more accessible and vibrant waterfront and supports the City’s goals for a liveable, healthy and connected community.
The new multi-use pathway will support walking, cycling, running and rolling along the scenic Fraser River and in a safer, more accessible setting separated from vehicle traffic.
“Residents have been asking for access to our riverfront for years and this is an exciting milestone for our community as part of the City’s broader vision of building a healthier, active community,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “This pathway is an important step in improving public access to the Fraser River and creating more places where people can walk, cycle, gather and enjoy the natural beauty of Maple Ridge.”
The project is funded through the City’s 2022 – 2026 Capital plan and the Province of British Columbia’s Growing Communities Fund, which supports local infrastructure and amenities in growing communities.
“The Port Haney Multi-Use Pathway is a meaningful investment in safe, accessible active transportation and in public access to one of Maple Ridge’s most treasured natural assets,” said Lisa Beare, MLA for Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows. “This project will help residents and visitors connect with the Fraser River, support healthier transportation choices and strengthen the community connections that make Maple Ridge such a special place to live.”
Improving Waterfront Access and Community Connections
The Port Haney Multi-Use Pathway will include a visitor parking lot, pathway lighting and entrance improvements to support safe public access. The project will also:
- enhance connections to parks, trails and key destinations;
- support recreation, wellness and active transportation;
- create a safer route separated from vehicle traffic;
- provide a more accessible public space for people of all ages and abilities;
- support community connection, tourism and local economic activity; and
- contribute to environmental sustainability.
The pathway is also part of the long-term vision for Experience the Fraser, a regional initiative to create a connected trail network along the Fraser River from the Salish Sea to Hope.
Community Engagement
Community input has helped shape the project. In October 2023, the City hosted a public engagement phase and invited residents to share their feedback through a survey and open house on the proposed multi-use pathway and a future waterfront park concept. Survey results showed strong support for the proposed multi-use pathway, with 83 per cent of respondents indicating they either “loved” or “liked” the concept. The feedback also showed that 80 per cent of respondents currently use the City’s existing network of multi-use pathways.
The community will be engaged again as part of the future park improvements at a later date once the multi-use pathway is completed.
Next Steps
Construction is expected to take approximately nine months with the pathway anticipated to open in spring 2027. During construction, staging for local film productions will continue in the gravel lot along the route.
The MUP will connect to the edge of Kanaka Creek Regional Park and will eventually form a connected network of trails. Metro Vancouver recently announced expansion of the park by 3.5 hectares, further protecting parkland in the region.
