Maple Ridge, B.C., May 29, 2026 – Free public outdoor swimming is returning to Hammond Outdoor Pool for Maple Ridge residents this summer following the success of last year’s pilot initiative.
Introduced in 2025, the program was created to reduce barriers to recreation, encourage healthy and active lifestyles, and strengthen community connection by making outdoor swimming more accessible for residents. The initiative applies to public drop-in swimming only. Registered programs, aquafit classes, rentals, and special events will continue to operate under regular admission fees.
With Maple Ridge's population growing at a rate twice the national average in recent years, demand for the City's indoor and outdoor recreation facilities is increasing. The free program at Hammond Outdoor Pool received strong community support in its first year, with participation nearly doubling compared to previous seasons. Residents and families shared positive feedback with City staff throughout the summer, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to enjoy a free activity close to home. Many pool visitors proudly collected "MR Proud" stickers while spending time at the facility.
"The strong response to free public swimming last year showed how important accessible recreation opportunities are to our community," said Mayor Dan Ruimy. "With costs continuing to rise for families, we’re pleased to continue investing in initiatives that promote healthy, active lifestyles, social connection, and inclusion. By removing admission fees, we're ensuring affordable access to swimming and recreation for all residents."
The Hammond Pool Free Swim initiative resulted in a significant increase in community usage in 2025, with attendance rising to 8,322 visits compared to 5,913 visits in 2024. City staff were able to successfully accommodate the increased demand during the 2025 season by adapting staffing levels during peak periods, while continuing to maintain safe and welcoming access to the facility.
Hammond outdoor pool opens for weekend operations starting June 6 and daily starting June 28 until Sept. 11. For more information on pool hours and programming, visit MapleRidge.ca/HammondPool. For additional information, contact PRC@MapleRidge.ca.
Planning is underway for a new aquatics and recreation facility at Hammond Community Park to serve the community into the future. Learn more about this initiative at Engage.MapleRidge.ca/Move-Meet-Play.
