UPDATE: Thunderstorm Warning Cancelled

Aug 14 8:45  am

Environment Canada has cancelled the Thunderstorm Warning for Maple Ridge.

While this warning was only in place for about an hour this morning, it’s a good reminder to be prepared! Weather conditions can change quickly and it’s important to stay alert.

Environment and Climate Change Canada launched a new system this week that tracks severe storm system in real time using live radar information. So when the storm risk leaves an area, the alert is cancelled. The City's Alertable System is now plugged into this national system. Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for parts of northeast Metro Vancouver, including Maple Ridge.

A thunderstorm is moving north through the region.
Damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, lightning and hail up to the size of quarters are possible.

If a thunderstorm approaches:

  • Come indoors right away and stay away from windows.
  • Avoid trees, open areas and water.
  • Bring pets inside.
  • Secure loose outdoor items, if it is safe to do so.
  • Be prepared for power outages
  • Avoid using corded electronics and plumbing until the storm passes.

If driving, slow down, leave extra space and never drive through flooded roads.

Lightning may also increase wildfire risk in dry vegetation. Please use extra caution in wildfire-prone areas.
