Fire Prevention Week 2026: October 3 to 9

Use Your Charging Super Powers!
Fire Prevention Week: October 3-9
Fire Prevention Week is here! This year’s theme, Use Your Charging Super Powers, is all about keeping your home safe from lithium-ion battery fires.
Lithium-Ion Batteries: Power with Caution
From phones and laptops to e-bikes and power tools, lithium-ion batteries keep our lives moving. But if they’re not used or charged properly, they can spark dangerous fires.
Stay safe with these smart tips:
- Cheap charger? Use the cord and charger that came with your device, or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Soft surface? Charge devices on a hard, flat surface, such as a table, desk or bare floor.
- Fully charged? Unplug your device when it is fully charged.
- For tools and rides, charge outside: When possible, charge larger items such as e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside. Never charge them where they could block an exit.
- Feels hot? Stop using a device if it becomes very hot, swells, smells unusual, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
Did You Know?
Anything with a lithium-ion battery can become a fire hazard if it’s not charged properly. Protect your home and family by following these quick tips:
✔️ Use only the manufacturer’s charger
✔️ Replace damaged or bent cords immediately
✔️ Charge on hard, flat surfaces—never on beds, couches, or soft furniture
✔️ Unplug at 100%
Charging safely = preventing fires.
