City Expands Online Building Permits with New Occupancy and Seasonal Patio Applications

Maple Ridge, B.C., July 22, 2026 – The City of Maple Ridge continues to make permit applications easier and more convenient by adding Occupancy Permits and Seasonal Patio Permits to its Online Building Permit Portal. With these additions, the City now offers nine permit types online, giving builders, developers, businesses and residents more ways to apply, submit documents and manage permit requirements digitally.

The expansion is part of the City’s Development Services Optimization (DSO) program, which is focused on a digital transition, improving customer service, reducing administrative steps, and making development and building processes more consistent and predictable.

“Every new service we bring online makes it easier for customers to do business with the City,” said Mayor Dan Ruimy. “These new online options support both housing and local business activity by making important permit processes more accessible and easier to navigate.”

Occupancy Permit Applications Now Online

Occupancy permits are the final step in the development process which certifies a newly constructed or renovated building complies with all applicable building codes and permit conditions and is safe for habitation or operations. Applicants can now submit Occupancy Permit applications online, upload documents digitally, receive application updates and respond to requests for additional information through the City’s online portal.

Seasonal Patio Applications Now Available Online

The City has also moved Seasonal Patio Permit applications online to make the process easier for eligible businesses.

Businesses can now apply for Seasonal Patio Permits through the City’s Online Building Portal using a simple, guided process which ensures applicants review program requirements before submitting their application. Businesses planning patios that temporarily affect a roadway will automatically be directed to obtain a Highway Use Permit – also available online – prior to completing their application.

Online Portal Maintenance Scheduled for August 10

The City will complete a maintenance update to the Online Building Permit Portal in the early morning hours of August 10, 2026 to prepare the system to introduce complex building permit applications.

Existing user accounts, application records, and submitted documents will be unaffected by this maintenance update and there will be no changes to existing permit application processes or business workflows. The City appreciates users’ patience during this brief maintenance period as we continue expanding online services for residents, businesses, builders, and developers.

“Our goal is to make working with the City as simple and predictable as possible,” added James Stiver, Director of Planning and Building with the City of Maple Ridge. “Every improvement we make—whether it’s a new online permit, a streamlined workflow, or behind-the-scenes system upgrades—helps us deliver better service while supporting new investment and economic growth in Maple Ridge.”

Since its inception the DSO program has reduced permit processing times significantly, including a 73% reduction in processing times for New Home Permits. The City will continue expanding digital services and streamlining processes to improve turnaround times and increase online capabilities. Upcoming work will include planning application processes, including Official Community Plan amendments, rezonings, development permits, development variance permits, and subdivision applications.
