Maple Ridge has a variety of systems in place for dealing with waste collection, from a robust community recycling partner program, to an Adopt-A-Block program to help keep the streets clean.
Where Does Our Garbage Go? Think Twice!
Canadians generate approximately 31 million tonnes of garbage a year and only recycle about 30% of that material. This means that each person generates approximately 2.7 kilograms of garbage each day. Due to the sheer volume of waste many existing landfill sites are approaching capacity and few people want new sites built near their communities.
Metro Vancouver Solid Waste Management
Approval of the Integrated Solid Waste and Resource Management Plan (PDF) (ISWRMP) in July 2011 set the framework for solid waste management in the Metro Vancouver Region for the next decade. The plan covers an eight-year period and is currently being reviewed and updated. Every two years, Metro Vancouver reviews and reports on what progress has been made towards the plan's goals (Biennial Summary Report (PDF)).
