Maple Ridge is Moving on Abernethy Way Widening

MAPLE RIDGE, Feb. 2, 2024…The contract for the next phase of the widening of Abernethy Way, between 224 Street and 230 Street has been approved by Council.

Following a competitive process, the contract has been awarded to Lafarge Canada Inc. in the amount of $8.475 million with a $1.5 million contingency for unforeseen circumstances on the project.

The funding for the project is part of the City’s 2024 Capital Plan and priority in the City’s Strategic Transportation Plan.

This project scope includes:

  • Four-lane configuration from 224 Street to 232 Street
  • Intersection improvements to accommodate the new lanes and traffic signal upgrades
  • Reconstructing the multi-use path on the north side of Abernethy Way and retaining the existing sidewalk on the south side
  • Drainage improvements
  • New streetlights and street trees
  • Privacy screening along the multi-use path as required

“The Abernethy Way expansion is something our community has been wanting for some time,” said Mayor Ruimy. “This is an important part of the City’s long-term planning to expand our road network in Maple Ridge. As the work on this project gets underway, we are looking on expanding this corridor east to 240 Street to support better transportation flows and a new bridge crossing into Silver Valley and Golden Ears Provincial Park.”

He continued, “This expansion and a new bridge crossing is a central part of our Maple Ridge Moves Plan, a suite of smart and sustainable projects with regional benefits. It will also provide an alternative route while Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is being built.”

Construction is anticipated to start in Spring 2024 and completed by Spring 2025.

Project Impacts

The project will widen Abernethy Way to four lanes by using the existing City road right-of-way on the north side of Abernethy Way. The addition of these two lanes and the relocation of the multi-use path may impact vegetation and some fencing along the north side of the project area and at intersections.

With the award of tender completed, construction notices will be mailed to impacted residents by the contractor providing more detailed information on the construction schedule and traffic impacts. Updates will also be shared on the City’s social media platforms.
