MAPLE RIDGE, Mar. 4, 2024 – Construction for the next phase of the widening of Abernethy Way, between 224 Street and 230 Street starts this week.
This project will provide:
- Continuous four-lane configuration from 210 Street to 232 Street
- Intersection improvements to accommodate the new lanes and traffic signal upgrades
- Reconstructing the multi-use path on the north side of Abernethy Way and retaining the existing sidewalk on the south side
- Drainage improvements
- Privacy screening along the multi-use path as required
- New streetlights and street trees
Project Timelines
Aplin and Martin Consultants Ltd. has been retained to design the project. Lafarge Canada Inc. has been retained to construct the project.
Construction is set to start with site preparation this week. Road excavation is anticipated to begin mid-March. The project is anticipated to be completed in spring 2025.
Project Impacts
The project will widen Abernethy Way to four lanes by using the existing City road right-of-way on the north side of Abernethy Way. The addition of these two lanes and the relocation of the multi-use path may impact vegetation and some fencing along the north side of the project area and at intersections.
The current multi-use path will be closed from 224 Street to 230 Street. Pedestrians are advised to use the sidewalk on the south side of Abernethy Way and cyclists are advised to detour along Reid Avenue and 124 Avenue.
Traffic impacts
There will be partial lane closures with work being scheduled from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, with occasional work on Saturday as required. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained during peak traffic hours. Please follow posted signage and plan alternative routes as needed.
Construction notices have been mailed to impacted residents by the contractor, providing more detailed information on the construction schedule and impacts. Regular updates will also be shared on the City’s social media platforms.
