The City of Maple Ridge gathered data at 13 park and trail locations in 2020 and will increase data collection locations to 25 in 2021. Data collection occurs at the entrances to parks using counters installed on roads, at parking lots, trails and within parks. Counter data is collected and reviewed by staff before it is shared. In addition to the information presented on the above infographic, a few additional highlights for 2020 include the following:
- Whonnock Lake Park saw heavy use in July and August with an increase of approximately 57% from 2019. On busy weekends in the summer Whonnock lake was seeing 1200-1300 vehicles enter the parking area during the day.
- Maple Ridge Park continues to be a popular location, especially in the summer when we recorded approximately 25,000 vehicles (62,500 people) per month accessing one of the three parking lots in July and August 2020.
- Peak trail usage across all monitored trails occurred in the months of April and May in 2020.
- Trail counters around the Alouette River recorded their peak numbers in the months of July and August in 2020.
