From the farm to the dinner plate in less than three days!
Eating locally and in rhythm with the seasons is made easier when you shop at farmers markets.
"The Haney Farmers Market is a community gathering place and we strive to entertain people as well as to bring them the very best produce and prepared foods that are made and grown locally" said Eileen Dwillies, Market Manager. There is much more than just fruits and vegetables at the market - local meats, baked goods, honey, pickles, and jams are all available.
"Part of our mandate is to educate, so we also have cooking classes at the Market and "Try It You'll Like It" tastings at which we talk about nutrition and seasonal eating," said Dwillies. "We are planning some interesting cooking challenges this year so watch for details. It's a great chance to taste the vegetable or fruit that is new."
The Haney Farmers Market plays a key role in marketing local agriculture products and attracts 1,500 residents and visitors each week that are interested in shopping local. In 2008 it was estimated by Farmers' Markets Canada that Canadian farmers markets generate direct annual sales of over one billion dollars and have a total economic impact of more than three billion dollars. Farmers markets help keep local farms in business by providing an opportunity for farmers to get a retail price for their goods rather than a wholesale price, which in most cases is less than half the retail price.
