Common Bylaw Violations and the Complaint Process

To assist you with the complaint process, please use the Licences, Permits and Bylaws Complaint Form [PDF, 46KB], or pick one up at the Licences, Permits and Bylaws front counter. For noise complaints, barking dog complaints and suite complaints please use the complaint forms as noted below. If you prefer, you can phone in your complaint, make your complaint in person to the Licences, Permits and Bylaws Department, send your complaint in the mail or via email. Please note that we do not accept anonymous complaints. You can also provide comments and feedback online.

Some of the more common bylaw violations are:

Building Bylaw

  • building without a permit
  • building after a stop work order had been given
  • occupying a building without an occupancy permit

Please contact the District of Maple Ridge's Licences, Permits and Bylaws Department at 604-467-7311 if you would like to make a complaint regarding Building Bylaw violations.

Dog Control Bylaw

Please contact the Maple Ridge SPCA at 604-463-9511 to report a dog at large.

Highway and Traffic Bylaw

  • overtime parking
  • parking within 3 metres of a private driveway or entrance
  • parking within 6 metres of a stop sign or traffic control signal
  • parking within 5 metres of a fire hydrant
  • parking in a "no parking" or restricted parking area
  • parking an overweight vehicle (over 5,500 kg) in a residential zone
  • leaving an unhitched trailer or boat on the street

For any moving traffic violations, like speeding, please contact the RCMP at 604-463-6251 or 911 if considered an emergency.

Noise Bylaw

If the noise you hear is gunshots or people fighting, please contact the RCMP at 911.

For other noise complaints, please contact the Licences, Permits and Bylaws Department. Please note the time(s), date(s), duration(s) and the type of noise that is occurring for the following:

  • construction noise outside of the hours of 7:00 am to 9:00 pm, Monday to Saturdays and on statutory holidays

When making a complaint, please note the company name from any signage from the construction site and or any licence plate numbers from any vehicles located on the construction site.   

  • loud noise, such as music, that disturbs the neighbourhood

  • barking dogs

The Licences, Permits and Bylaws Department's barking dog log, available online [PDF, 101KB], will help you to record these occurrences. Please also refer to the Barking Dog Pamphlet, available online [PDF, 53KB], for some helpful hints. Barking Dog Logs, Barking Dog Pamphlet and Noise Logs are also available at the Licences, Permits and Bylaws Department front counter, or you can have one mailed to you if wish.

Untidy/Unsightly Bylaw

  • garbage and debris  
  • unmowed grass
  • overgrown vegetation or noxious weeds (eg. blackberry bushes)
  • graffiti on buildings or structures

Zoning Bylaw

  • illegal suites
  • wrecked vehicles
  • unlicensed vehicles
  • overweight and over length vehicles/boats/trailers on a residential property
