Affordable Housing Plan for BC

The BC Non-Profit Housing Association together with the Co-op Housing Federation of BC, Vancity Credit Union, LandlordBC and other members of the BC Rental Housing Coalition released an Affordable Housing Plan for BC. The plan proposes a series of specific, costed, and immediate measures to increase rental housing supply, close the affordability gap, and address chronic homelessness in BC.

Provincial Overdose Emergency

Fraser Health released their monthly situational report on the provincial overdose emergency with data up to the end of February 28, 2017. There were 29 and 30 illicit drug deaths in February and January respectively. There have been 2 deaths in Maple Ridge since the beginning of this year. In the Fraser Health region, from January to February 2017, the overdose death rate was highest among 30-39 years old, closely followed by 20-29 years old; this group saw the sharpest increase this year. Males accounted for 81% of all the overdose deaths this year in Fraser Health. The Coroners Service, identified that 83% of overdose deaths happened inside (68% private residences, 15% other locations) and 14% happened outside on sidewalks, streets, vehicles, parks, etc. The full report can be viewed online.

Count Finds Region-Wide Increase in Homelessness

The 2017 Homeless Count in Metro Vancouver found 3,605 people homeless in the region, up 30% from the previous count in 2014. View the 2017 Homeless Count in Metro Vancouver Preliminary Data Report.
