Forward 2020: Better Solutions, Together

Introducing FORWARD 2020: Better Solutions, Together

As citizens of Maple Ridge, you know all too well about the challenges our community has faced with respect to homelessness for many years, including camps on our streets.  A top priority for the City has been to work through these complex issues in order to make our streets safe and healthy for everyone. That’s why we are speaking to citizens in our community directly and getting their input on this important issue.

In order to engage the citizens of our City we’re excited to launch the local public consultation initiative FORWARD 2020: Better Solutions, Together. A comprehensive community dialogue about street homelessness, its impacts, causes and potential solutions for Maple Ridge.

Managed by City staff and with support from our colleagues in the provincial ministries, the goal of this program is to foster a better understanding of the issues we face, spark constructive ideas about solutions and help guide us as our community moves forward.

Some of the ways we will do this is through community consultation events, open channels of communication where people can submit their ideas and ongoing information sharing for people. Citizens need to have the facts about what’s happening in our community and how they can be involved.

In the weeks ahead there will be several opportunities to contribute to the conversation, and the City will provide ample opportunity to submit comments and provide input through our website.

There is another important aspect to the conversation we will have through this program; and that is the discussion about the proposed housing facility recently announced by the Province for our community.

The City has purchased property which could be a possible site for this facility, as it is in line with the Province’s guidelines governing transitional housing. However, decisions on the site are not final and we will be looking to hear from all of our citizens about this opportunity.

There are lots of success stories, and not so successful stories, for us to learn from. There are very passionate opinions on the causes and solutions to poverty and homelessness. Together, we can discuss these important matters in an open and inclusive way and, together, we can move our community forward.
