Requirements

Minimum Qualifications


The minimum qualifications required at the time of your application:
  • legally entitled to work in Canada
  • minimum 18 years of age by the start of recruit training
  • must reside in Maple Ridge by the end of recruit training
  • must have a high school diploma or equivalency (G.E.D.) 
  • must be able to pass a physical fitness test
  • must be able to pass required medical exam based on NFPA 1582
  • valid British Columbia Class 7 driver's license (must obtain a Class 5 license within 24 months of recruitment)
  • must present a favourable Driver's Abstract that has 6 points or less in any one year AND no more than 9 points in the five-year history. The abstract must not have any 214/215 suspensions or any other impaired driving conviction or any Superintendent of Motor Vehicle imposed suspension.  Any pending or outstanding charges must be declared.
  • a respectable Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector that will not bring the Fire Department into disrepute or hamper one's ability to obtain a first responders medical license

Preferred Qualifications


  • availability to respond to daytime emergencies
  • 2 year diploma or undergraduate/applied degree or journeyman certificate
  • advanced First Aid training
  • previous firefighting or other related work
  • Class 1 and Class 3 driver's licences or air brake endorsement
  • NFPA 1001 or 1002 certification
  • bronze medallion or equivalent
  • post-secondary academic diploma
  • technical, trades, or equivalent level
  • other related Fire Department training
